  • Canopus ADVC110 to Computer Monitor–is it possible?

Posted by Dave Petteruto on March 5, 2012 at 5:54 pm

    Hello All,
For viewing my video on the Vegas 10 timeline I currently have a Canopus ADVC110 that is connected via fire-wire from my computer. From there the Canopus outputs into an inexpensive small sized wide screen TV (via the red, white & yellow cables). Can I replace the TV with a computer monitor? If so how would I do this?

    Thanks
    Dave P.

I assume you are doing this because you want to color correct SD footage. In this case, a computer monitor based on non-CRT technology won’t give you the luminance range that you need (true blacks and whites). You really should use a proper SD broadcast monitor or get a TV that has composite or S-Video inputs.

If you really want to do this, you would need a computer monitor that accepted analog input since the ADVC110 is an analog device (component, S-Video, or composite). Those computer monitors that do can usually double as a TV if you plug a cable box into them.

I don’t see what added value using a computer monitor would bring you for SD footage. You are probably not getting clean output because you’re using composite out (yellow cable). Switch to using component out (red, green, blue) or S-Video out will improve your output significantly.

Thanks for the info John. Since the Canopus ADVC110 does not have RGB outputs I guess I could try the S-video and see what happens.

    Thanks

Yea. S-Video should make some improvement.
