Canon T3i – AF
I have an all black background and the people are wearing black. I have softboxes for light. I would like to use AF – but keep getting a red square and it remains out of focus. Any suggestions to allow AF to work? This may sound funny – but I also need to get into the shot after it starts – so MF is out. Thanks so much for any assistance.

Sounds like you don’t have enough contrast for the AF to work. Try setting up a backlight Rim to separate the people from the black background. Unless your intention is to make them blend in, then manual focus is the way to go here.
