Canon T2i and color shift
I’m on the brink of purchasing a T2i, and the only deal killer at this point is the issue of heat related color shift. I was in the camera store, and the clerk (actually I should give him more credit – he’s worked in film for years, and seems very knowledgeable) told me that as the CMOS sensor heats up, a color shift will occur over time. He says he has a friend who is a colorist at LucasFilm, and apparently they use DSLRs in some form – he says his friend dreads having to work with this footage. I appreciated his honesty, and am trying to come to grips with just how drastic this shift is. Color correcting a clip which is consistently off is relatively easy; color correcting a clip whose color changes over time is a nightmare!
Anyone experiencing this? How drastic is the shift? Thanks.

Heat does become an issue, but you see more noise than noticeable colour shift. You get a warning before this happens though. There are ways of dealing with the heat. If you are looking to shoot long clips (like over 10mins) I would look at a video specific camera instead.

Actually this would be a secondary camera for shooting production stills and b-roll, with possible use for short cutaways or reaction shots, if they can be matched to the primary footage (that’s my problem).
I was more worried about color shift over time, or noise for that matter, now that you mention it. If it doesn’t occur until after the heat warning goes off, then I’ll at least have a point at which I know to check my footage when I get it onto the editing box.Joe Bourke

Hi,
We used a 550D recently as a third camera for filming an event. Despite filming for long sections 10-12 minutes at a time and covering a full hour conference we didn’t experience any heat messages or issues in post that wasnt solved whilst colour correcting the whole piece anyway. Was a joy to use.

The main thing I see with HD-DSLR’s are not doing custom white balance for multiple camera shots, auto white balance cannot be relied upon for color accuracy.
