Canon PF30 footage in 720 30p Project? (I thought I had this down)
I thought I had this down, and it basically works, but I may need to take another look at how I initially set up a new Project so that my 1920×1080 PF30 .mts files from my Canon S100 AVCHD camera don’t need to be rendered when added to a new 1280×720 30p, stereo 48k Project. I am not using Optimized Media or Proxy, just pointing to the original H.264 camera files.
When files are added to the timeline and I check in the inspector, the Canon “30p” files show up as 29.97fps, 1080i.
I found this article last night which has some explanation as to what is going on with the Canon files in FCP X-
https://www.rassoc.com/gregr/weblog/2011/12/02/editing-canon-30p-pf30-footage-in-fcpx/Is the 1280×720 30p Project still my best bet or should I take the extra step with double-import as outlined in the above article and use a 29.97p project? The extra render time in the beginning is not a huge deal for me, so if the final outcome is essential the same, I can keep the 720p stereo projects. My final output is to the web (via Compressor 3.5) and using the 720p Project so I can add zooms and pans on the footage.
I’m also not completely adverse to using ClipWrap to either wrap or transcode to 1080 30p Pro Res 422, but it’s also another step I may be able to avoid. On the plus side with either method of ClipWrap, I can then abandon the camera archive structure and then preview the files outside of FCP X with QT 7, toss the bad clips, and re-name and re-organize prior to FCP X (which I suppose would fit my backup and workflow habits better).
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Dave
