    Hi guys,

I’m a British 21 year old documentary student on a very tight budget.

I have just acquired a Canon MD235 Mini DV cam, with an external mic input so that I can film interviews for a documentary. (I know the film will not be great quality, but I want to make it as good as I can).

I am thinking about purchasing a second-hand RODE Video Mic (Shotgun/Unidirectional) to improve the sound on my recordings. But although the camera has an external mic input, it seems not to have any way of attaching the mic (no “cold shoe” and no place to fit one… i think that’s the right lingo- sorry if not!)

    So yeh, any ideas?

If there is no way of attaching the mic AT ALL (which I’m guessing is because it’s a low-end camera), do you have any DIY tips as to how I might fashion a means of attaching a mic?
(Yep. It’s/I am that desperate I would stretch to DIY).

Any advice would be really great. Thankyou so much, in advance. 🙂

    Zoe.

Don’t attach the mic to the camera.

That’s not the best place to position a mic except when recording “natural sound” (general sounds of the location.)
To record dialogue or interviews, you want the mic positioned just out of frame near the mouth of the person who is speaking.

Far better positions for the mic:
On a boom, hand-held by an assistant when walking or mobile,
or on a boom on a stand when in static “studio” conditions.
