  • Canon GL2 problems when external Hard Drives are connected FCP 5.0.4? HELP

Posted by Sebastian Knight on May 3, 2006 at 11:13 pm

I have a new Power Mac Dual 2.3 G5, I installed FCP when I go to open FCP with camera off it opens no problem, if I start-up with camera connected I get beach ball of death. I do have several external hard drives connected. When I disconnect those hard drives the Final Cut Pro will launch and see the camera no problem. Because of this I am forced to change my scratch disk to me start-up drive, which slows down performance and I have limited space. So really need to able to access the external drives with my Canon GL2 connected at the same time. Please help!!

  • There are 2 ways of connecting External HD and a camcorder.

    1. HD’s on one FW port, Camcorder on the other.

2, HD’s on one FW port, Camcorder daisy-chained to the last HD.

Whichever way you had it hooked up before, try the OTHER way.

And then, let us know what happens.

I’m wondering if this is a problem with too much load on one firewire card?

Can you give more details on your system set-up? It is known that there are issues with some Canon cameras and LaCie Hard drives when they are put on the same firewire bus. The best solution is to purchase a PCI firewire card and put your drives on one bus, and then camera on the second bus.

In my own experience this seems to be the worst when combining the GL2 with FW800 drives on the same bus. I’ve done tests and found the only other solution is to use strictly FW400 drives for capture of DV footage.
