  • Canon 7D footage stuttering while playing back in FCP

Posted by Consuelo Gonzalez on September 30, 2011 at 7:00 pm

    1) In FCP, using footage from a Canon 7D that was already on a hard drive, the playback is stuttering. Also when I edit it into the timeline, it needs to be rendered (once rendered it plays fine).

    2) What is the proper way to bring media from a Canon 7D card into FCP?

    THANK YOU!

    Hi Consuelo,
Here you can learn a proper workflow for your footage.

It’s usually best to transcode your footage into the Apple ProRes codec. FCP7 doesn’t do well handling DSLR (h.264) footage. Any dissolves or fx will have to be immediately rendered. Unless you plan on straight cuts then you’ll need to get out of the h.264 codec and into something FCP likes.

You can transcode using Compressor or MPEG Streamclip. Bring that media back into FCP and you’re good to go.

I agree 100% with Ryan. H.264 is a great format to deliver your video but it’s really bad to edit in unless all you are doing is simple cuts and nothing else. ProRes is my choice too – the ProRes files are about 3 times as large as the H.264 but it actually plays back much smoother.

I even see this stuttering in Quicktime Pro on my desktop – so even before the file is in Final Cut.
