I work for a small production company and we are using XL1 and XL1S. I have looked into cheap alternatives (red scarlet etc..) and the 7d looks very promising but i cant get a straight answer on the work flow with avid. I am using version 4.6, can i capture straight from the 7d its, as im sure you know, a .mov file. And also i need to know if down converting it from hd is ok for broadcast.

Thank you Creative Cow you guys rock!!!!!Many a frustrating moment has been fixed by you guys!

[Chris Lohmann] “we are using XL1 and XL1S. I have looked into cheap alternatives (red scarlet etc..”

Scarlet isn’t any cheaper than those. Nor is it out yet. Only one prototype thus far.

The 7D and 5D record H.264 QTs. Simply import those into Avid using the IMPORT function, and convert them to DNxHD.

Why wouldn’t it be? Should be fine. But I have only imported it as HD myself.

I’m having the same questions regarding importing HD footage from a Canon 5d Mark II. Yes, the format is H264 Quicktime and can be imported into the Avid, but the Canon records at 1080p 30fps. Avid does not have these specs as an option in project settings. Anyone know the answer?
    Thanks

So I have been reading a lot on the canon 7d and it can shoot at 24fps (i dont know about the 5d m2) does that make it compatable, and it comes out as a qt folder straight from the card already compressed right?

[Warren’s Oates] “the Canon records at 1080p 30fps. Avid does not have these specs as an option in project settings.”

Sure it does. That is a pretty standard format. 29.97fps, BTW. 30fps straight up isn’t a broadcast format. It will be converted.
