Canon 5D Sony Vegas Pro Work flow
Posted by Thomas Roberts on October 4, 2010 at 3:48 amDoes anyone have any current production exp with Canon 5D video?
1. Do you edit in ProRes? Can Sony Vegas Pro play ProRes?
2. I currently convert H.264 via Mpeg stream clip to AVI, is there a better codec for Sony Vegas? Thanks,
T

October 4, 2010 at 4:59 amI have a 7D, so I think the workflow is the same. I personnally convert the MOV files the AVIs with Cineform Neoscene (100$) before importing in Vegas. Otherwise I have out of memory errors and/or crashes, appearing randomly.
This tool has been recommended to my on this forum, and it changed my life 🙂
However, it looks like the next VegasPro version coming up will address Canon MOV files directly, and conversion should not be needed any more. To be checked…

October 4, 2010 at 7:21 amSame here. Convert to Cineform AVI files and take it from there. Changed my life too!! Was a nightmare before that.

October 4, 2010 at 10:52 amCineform is the equivalent of ProRes for the PC (i.e., a digital intermediary that edits easily and can withstand multiple renders with no visible loss in quality). As others have said, the Vegas Pro 10 announcement looks like Sony has improved native editing of DSLR files so you may want to wait and see but, IMHO, anyone working in HD on the PC should own Cineform. It comes in handy a lot.

October 4, 2010 at 4:40 pmJohn,
If I need to send out files to Final Cut editors, will Cineform allow me to encode to ProRes?
Thanks,
Thomas

Did you ever use MPEG Stream clip to convert?
Thanks,
Thomas

October 4, 2010 at 5:03 pmI have done just that – and in fact, the Mac FCP editors can view a cineformed .AVI file. They need the Cineform codec, which is provided for free in Neoplayer.
