I have stupidly copied a bunch of canon 5d video files from my CF cards to my Hard drive as files and not kept the file structure however the files still have their original name. I am now hoping to copy the files back to a free CF card and log and transfer into FCP. However log and transfer is not recognising the files. I tried creating a folder called 100EOS5D which I put inside another self named folder DCIM but it doesnt seem to help. Is there anyway I can get the files back on a card with the correct file structure so I can bring them into FCP using the EOS plugin. Much appreciated

I worked it out, You also need the .THM file which must be the data that EOS recognizes.

These files do not need to be on a CF card, just the folder structure and all the files (as you found out) need to be in their place, but this work if everything is on the HD, which is the way you want to do it. A benefit is that the folder that contains your folder and files from the CF card will become the REEL name.

Thanks Michael that is great information, ok here is a tricky one. One of the camera operators formatted a card with an interview. I managed to get the mov files back using Sandisk rescue but do not have the THM files. What is the best option then?I will rescan the card to try and get all files but theoretically can anything be done without the THM file ?

Without the THM files you cannot use the Log and Transfer but you could do your convert to ProRes with Compressor or StreamClip. The thing you lose over L&T is the TimeCode being added.

I would thin that if the card got back the mov files it would get back everything. But copy what you got before you do anything else. You can live without the THMs.

If I pull all the mov files out of the DCIM folder and threw out the MISC folder. I later found out that in order for final cut pro to work with the canon files you need your files to be in those folders. IF I make a folder named DCIM and MISC and put the mov files in the DCIM folder will it work with final cut pro?
    thanks pam

Yes L&T will work if you recreate a folder called DCIM and put your files in there. Remember to also keep the THM files which hold the header information.

Do I need to create the MISC folder too?
You refer to L&T, I am not sure what that is.
Are saying that if I create a DMIC folder and put the files in the folder it will work in Final cut pro.?
    Thanks
