What timecode? If you log and transfer in FCP 7 with the EOS plugin and transcode to ProRes, then the EOS plugin will generate timecode based on time of day. But the .mov file doesn’t have timecode in itself.

So using 5D footage directly as h264 in FCP X doesn’t get you any timecode.

The 5D Mk3 now adds TC to the file, unlike previous models. It’s embedded in the QT. The EOS plug-in derived TOD code from the .thm files in the 5D Mk2.

And yes, X does not read that code, just like it doesn’t read a lot of other embedded metadata in some QT files generated by other cameras. I have used QtChange to re-stripe the TC tracks and X will read that.

Thanks for the response guys. I’m really surprised by this. Premiere CS6 sees the Mark3’s timecode, as does good old quicktime 7.

Another thing that works is using Adobe media encoder (CS6) to convert the footage to pro res. This also retains the timecode.

Worth trying if Compressor will convert to ProRes and retain timecode. It does so for other formats.

I havent used the TC option with FCPX for other reasons.
With the recent update, we’ve never had issues with Multicam.
