Canon 5d mark3 not supported?
Posted by Bob Pierce on July 21, 2012 at 9:06 pmI’m surprised by this. I can bring the .mov files in, but X doesn’t see the timecode. Does anyone have experience with this?
Thanks,

July 21, 2012 at 10:03 pmWhat timecode? If you log and transfer in FCP 7 with the EOS plugin and transcode to ProRes, then the EOS plugin will generate timecode based on time of day. But the .mov file doesn’t have timecode in itself.
So using 5D footage directly as h264 in FCP X doesn’t get you any timecode.

July 21, 2012 at 11:46 pmThe 5D Mk3 now adds TC to the file, unlike previous models. It’s embedded in the QT. The EOS plug-in derived TOD code from the .thm files in the 5D Mk2.
And yes, X does not read that code, just like it doesn’t read a lot of other embedded metadata in some QT files generated by other cameras. I have used QtChange to re-stripe the TC tracks and X will read that.

July 22, 2012 at 1:37 amThanks for the response guys. I’m really surprised by this. Premiere CS6 sees the Mark3’s timecode, as does good old quicktime 7.

July 22, 2012 at 1:43 amAnother thing that works is using Adobe media encoder (CS6) to convert the footage to pro res. This also retains the timecode.

July 23, 2012 at 7:57 amWorth trying if Compressor will convert to ProRes and retain timecode. It does so for other formats.

July 23, 2012 at 3:04 pmI havent used the TC option with FCPX for other reasons.
With the recent update, we’ve never had issues with Multicam.
