Filmed a segment in canon’s 24f frame rate and imported into final cut as apple pro res codec. watching the footage back on the computer looks fine, pans are smooth, everything looks good, but watching back the same footage on an external monitor gives it a real jumpy/jagged look. the networks won’t accept it, and we are trying to figure out how to fix this. Any ideas? Could it be that the shutter speed did not match the 24f frame rate when recorded? is there something I could do with compressor to fix this look?

Hmmm…I have footage from that camera mixed in with a DVCPRO HD project, and I haven’t removed the pulldown yet (gotta convert to DVCPRO HD first)…and it looks…well, stuttery, but not jagged. Did you remove pulldown on that footage to get it to 23.98, or did you leave it as 29.97? What capture card are you using?

Well I imported through a blaqckmagic decklink extreme caprture card, using the blackmagic hdtv 1080i 59.94 apple prores codec. I left the footage as 29.97, (tried removing pulldown but same issue) I hear that it could be from the shutter speed when using the 24f frame rate when recording? But yes the footage stutters more than jagged, either way it looks great on the computer, but very stuttery on the external monitor. Do you think I might be able to import the footage as something else and solve this?

Shane, thanks anyways, I figured it out. All that needed to be done was to check none under field dominance in the sequence settings, and the video runs smoothly. Thanks anyways.

    Hi Shane.

” Did you remove pulldown on that footage to get it to 23.98, or did you leave it as 29.97?”

I think you may be mistaking Canon’s 24f from cameras like the XHA1 with the “24PF” from the HV20 and 30 which require a reverse telecine through Compressor. 24f is 23.98. Fortunately the HV40 shoots 24f now too.

I am considering shooting a feature with the xha1 and have been scouring the posts and was wondering if anyone could help me out with a few questions. I intend to shoot at 24f and with either fcp 5.0.1 or 6 and when I was importing test footage it was very jagged until we set the sequence settings at 29.97 and it smoothed out a bit, but now I’m a little worried about the jaggedness. Can I just go directly into fcp if I’ve shoot at 24f or does the footage require some sort of third party software to smooth the image? A;so, if my setting is at 29.97 in fcp will that cause an issue as far as festival screenings and where the project is going if it’s not going to the web or tv? New with this camera and a little confused how to get and maintain the best possible 24f footage..
any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
