  • Cannot transfer MXF files to FCP

Posted by Francisco Vazquez on February 17, 2009 at 7:58 pm

I recently shoot a TV commercial with my P2 camera using 720PA at 30 FPS. I uploaded both files: the CONTENTS and LASTCLIP.TXT, but every time that I try to import the clips to Final Cut Pro, using the Log and Transfer window, they just don’t go though. I can play them, but I cannot import them. The files have video and sound. I don’t get an error massage, just an exclamation point (!), next to the clip at the import bin section.

    I’ll appreciate any help…

Open the log and transfer preferences and uncheck the option to remove pulldown and try again.

#36 – One or More P2 files failed to import.

Shane’s Stock Answer #36 – “One or more clips failed to import…”

Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don’t like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)…the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window…is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.

What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.

ALSO…in the P2 Import window…in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.

ALSO…make sure your file names aren’t too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.

ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn’t have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

In my experience, every time this has happened has been because the filename (the name you’re giving each clip while logging) was too long. It’s very frustrating because it’s not consistent: sometimes it will log and import happily clips with long names, and other times a name of just 20 characters will make it spit the red “!” sign. Personally, in those cases, I just give the clip a single-letter name, and then, once imported into FCP, I rename it.

I am having the SAME trouble and based on everything I’ve read in forums, I have:
    – unchecked the pulldown option
    – renamed the file
    – restarted FCP
    – remounted the drive

i tried copying all the files off the Firestore to another hard drive and I get this error: “The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “0004sw.mxf” can’t be read or written. (error code -36)”.

I was able to play the clip in the viewer of log and transfer, BUT NOW, after having just restarted fcp, the video looks all messed up and won’t play. fml. I am so sick of this firestore.

    Hi all,

I have seen this a few time in FCP and I’m not too sure what it is. But before you or in my case myself toss whats left of my brain and time off a bridge i have a suggestion. Adobe Premier will allow you to view/edit and trans-code .mxf file natively. If you don’t have AP you can down load it for 30 day trial for free. There are lots of .mxf translators on the market and some run in the hundreds, but I found this as a good work around. I recommend that you Google “Premier .mxf to XXX” and that will help you find a video or two on the path

If anyone knows why FCP spins it’s wheel and then give you a red! with an error message please let me know. The above is a work a round and it works well.

Good luck and keep me posted.
