Go to Compressor discussions on Apple support website. There are a number of different things that might cause and/or fix this.

First try deleting Compressor and re-installing including the 1.2.1 update.

There is some kind of network issue involved.

It’s a complicated issue, far too many possible explanations and cures to list here.
    Hit apple.com
and search for your terms. You are going to disappointed that there isn’t a magic bullet but you should eventually find an answer among the dozens of threads.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

As Nick and Bogie said, it can be any number of things. Here is the fix that worked for me:

go to finder, go, go to folder
    type /etc/
    view as icons
locate “hostconfig” and COMMAND then click on file and drag to desktop.

    First thing to try:
Disconnect all network. This means Firewire, USB and ethernet.
Compressor “looks for network engines” according to some wonks. All buses are considered network ports.
