This may sound like an old ever asked question, but I really need some help for this.
I’m trying to convert a 2 clip sequence from NTSC to PAL and I’m doing all it tells me in the manual, but I still get the dreaded “Cannot submit batch Unable to connect to background process” message.
And yes, it’s Compressor 2 with FCP 5 on a G5 2.7 GHz with 4 Gigs of RAM and a Kona LS card.
Can anybody help me through this?
    Thanks.

As always this is a great forum, and my main source for solving problems
I’m just an editor, not a tech guy. Sorry guys n’ gals.

I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM!! On Apples site under their knowledge base, it says to trash some receipts from Compressor and do a reinstall of those apps only. This should work, but it didn’t work for me. By the way, my project is due Friday and i have to burn 55 DVD’s. Time is not on my side!!

There is a way to “kickstart” Compressor. You open up the utility called Terminal and type in some magic code and hit enter, then your password and enter, and then quit terminal and Voila Compressor works!

The problem is I dont have the magic code with me here at home, but if you search the Compressor discussion group at Apple you’ll find it. I’ll try and remember to post it here tomorrow when I’m back at work.

GUYS! I didn’t go to bed until 2AM trying to fix this problem. As i mentioned i have to turn in 55 DVD’s on Friday, and i need COMPRESSOR to work on my G5. NOTHING has worked. I was on the phone with APPLE SUPPORT for over 2 hours (several phone calls with a case number as well). Finally, i did a COMPLETE new installation and get it back to factory sets as if i just took it out of the box. The first thing that i installed was the Final Cut Studio. After doing all of the updates guess what? This #$U#$*_ still doesn’t work, and you can rest assure that Clients that are paying top $ do not want to hear this BS! Can anyone help as i am TOTALLY lost in the floods. Right now i’m feeling like APPLE is FEMA.

Gregory I feel for you. Deadlines can be deadly, I wish I had a solution. But we all hope that David has the magig words to open the wholy grail of Compressor by tomorrow, so we all can go on working.
And I hope APPLE is listening!

Knowing you have done a re-install of Studio including Compressor, try now just reinstalling compressor once again.

Should i uninstall everything related to Compressor? By the way, a lot of the settings in Compressor are missing. For example if i go to my Dual G4 1 GHz, or G4 Dual 1.25 GHz all of the settings are there such as all of the settings for MPEG2. However, on my several month old G5 Dual 2.7 GHz, a lot of those settings are not there. Remember i did a fresh install of the operating system to restore it back to factory settings. I am going to try another factory install and see what happens. I am also going to install the FCP 4 first and see if i am able to get all of my old settings back.

Launch Terminal (Application>Utilities>Terminal) and type this:

    sudo /Library/StartupItems/Qmaster/Qmaster

I saved in in a text file so I can cut and paste it.

then the password for your system and enter. When you put in your password you wont see it.

If you reboot the computer you have to do this over again, it doesn’t stay “fixed”.

I can’t take the credit for this, I got it from the Apple Compressor discussion.

YES! Worked like a charm. Beautiful workaround, now Apple must be informed!

    Huge thanks,
