  • Cannot Import C4D (.aec) Project into AE suddenly!!!

Posted by Jason Connolly on August 8, 2006 at 7:08 pm

Ugh. So, all of a sudden, AE gives me a “cannot parse the file” error when I try to bring in my .aec project into AE. I haven’t done this in a few months, but it was never a problem before.

    TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS TAKEN:
    1. Deleted C4D plug-in from AE plug-ins folder, re-installed from C4D software CD, didn’t help
    2. Downloaded latest C4D plug-in from MAXON, repeated first step, still didn’t work.
    3. Restarted MAC, didn’t work

    MY SPECS:
    C4D: 9.1
    AE: 6.5.1
    MAC OS X: 10.4.6
    POWERMAC G5, 2.5 GHz DP

    Thoughts anyone?

    Thanks!
    Jason

What I forgot to mention in my previous post above was that after AE gives me the “cannot parse” error, AE imports only PSD sequence from C4D, but none of the C4D cameras or lights.

    Thanks,
    Jason

I’ve never seen the cannot parse error for an .aec file, although I did have trouble with the one on the Maxon web site, it wouldn’t import the external compositing tag. They told me the one on the CD would probably work though,… then they emailed me a working version (PC though) Write them a trouble message and see if they won’t send you a newer plug-in. If you want to further your test while you wait, create a new scene with a camera and light and see if it’ll import. I have in the past had trouble with very long animations importing, the camera data seemed like it was too much for ae, so I split it in half…

    Thanks, bear…

Well, I’m not sure why this worked, but here’s what I did to “fix” the issue:

In C4D, I UNchecked “24-bit dithering” and changed my file format from PSD sequence to TGA sequence. After I did this, AE imported everything as it it should.

Anyone have insight? Is it because AE 6.5 can only support 16-bit or lower color? (Are they even related??)

    Thanks,
    Jason
