Cannot export reference files
Posted by Sverker Hahn on May 7, 2009 at 8:16 amI want to create reference files when exporting a QT-movie. I want to use Compressor without locking up FCP. Most of the time, the export creates selfcontained files, even when that option unchecked.
I have all footage rendered.
Why don´t I get reference files?

Are you working with a GOP format such as HDV, XDCAM or similar? If so then even though FCP does not need to render for full quality playback, it may need to do so for export … even for a reference movie.
With GOP based footage, if you have edited the raw source in any way at all, including selecting in and/or out points other than the media start and/or media end respectively, even though FCP reports that it can play back the footage at full quality without render, you would still need to force render those sections sections for FCP / QuickTime to be able to use them as external sources for a reference movie. That’s because by manipulating the clip, even changing In/Out points, causes QuickTime to need to rewrite the clip instances GOP structure if and when exporting. Try enabling all rendering options including Full Quality under the Render Selected menu, then select the timeline section by section and render those selections … when the full timeline has been force rendered see if you can then create a reference movie from the sequence.

May 7, 2009 at 3:40 pmHi Andy,
Lately I’ve been cutting EX-1 and exporting Reference movies without any issue.
Takes a bit longer to export that the usual, but they work great.

May 8, 2009 at 5:58 amHey Raf
Is this without force rendering? You note that it takes longer than usual and really it shouldn’t, a reference is just a reference …. are you certain that longer export time is not maybe because it actually is rendering those portions of the video where the GOP structure needs to be rewritten? Can you compare the exported reference movie file size vs a self contained file size.
Cheers, and greetings from KL

I get selfcontained files.
I work with XDCAM EX-files.

May 8, 2009 at 9:07 amHi Andy,
I will look more carefully the process.
I’ve been sending EX-1 Reference movies to Purifier. No rendering needed. Only cuts in the time-line.
It takes longer to export than any other codec.
In a way or other, where you cut, a GOP must be rebuild.
And I haven’t found any render from those exports.
What is clear is that the GOP structure makes behave the XDCAM in a different way that the average QT movie.
Had you notice that is not possible conform XDCAM or HDV files in CinemaTools?
The TC used by MPEG-2 can make things different to.
I will have a look. I think that the Reference files are also bigger than the usual. Now I go to the opening of the “Vientianale”. The most important film festival ever celebrated in Laos (well, will be the first one in Lao history).
I’m the guy who play the movies. Hope don’t make a mess:-)

May 8, 2009 at 11:25 amHi Andy,
I rerendered the files with even “full” checked. I still do not get reference files. In fact I get large files and smaller files that still are not reference files, at random as I see it.
An example is a sequence of 20 sekonds XDCAM EX 35 Mbits VBR. It is not edited other than the clip is brought in to the sequence. It is rendered, like you suggested, with all options checked, even the “Full” option.
1 Export > QuickTime Movie … > Current Settings : Audio and Video. “Recompress” unchecked, “Make movie selfcontained” unchecked.
2 The created file is 8 MB
3 I open the file in QT Player and save it as selfcontained movie.
4 The created file is now 89 MB
5 From QT Player I save again, now as a reference movie
6 The created fil is 20 K.
So, I get files with three sizes. Strange, I think.
I should add that I have created lots of reference movies in the past and have done it whenever it was suitable.
