  • cannot export dvcpro hd timeline- urgent help needed!!

Ok gurus, I really need your help here.

I finished editing a feature that was shot with the hvx200 in 720p 24pn mode, using Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.6 (on a PC with windows XP SP2). No problems importing and editing the footage at all, but now that I’m done and trying to export the footage so that it can be color corrected with Final Cut Studio, I am unable to create a file that can be imported into FCP.

First problem: when exporting under the setting “same as source” using Quicktime, the file stops rendering at around 25% (of an 82 minute feature). I keep getting an error “encode manager code 5”. Checked the console and it says there is a problem with the “in/out settings for dv100 encoder”. After much experimenting I tried to export smaller blocks, thinking I was having a memory leak somewhere, and it worked: I was able to export smaller segments without errors.

Unfortunately, these smaller files, exported “same as source” cannot be played back, and when imported into Final Cut Pro only show white frames. Also, for some reason FCP thinks they’re in PAL mode, and asks me to reset the timeline (even though it is set to the same format as the footage (dvcpro HD 720pn 23.98).

I have already tried exporting using “same as source” settings using the avid codec as well, but again, the footage cannot be played back at all, and also cannot be used with FCP.

I cannot simply export a QT reference file because the footage is spread over HDD that cannot be moved, so I MUST find a way to export the timeline only using “same as source” settings so that they can color correct this puppy at full resolution.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated. We have a deadline to submit this film so please please please help us!

DVCPro HD was not written for the PC–it’s installed when you install FCP. I believe Avid wrote their own codec (DV100) so it could be used on Avid PC systems.

If your Same as Source export (dv100) is showing a white screen on the Mac, the Mac doesn’t have the Avid codecs installed. Get the latest ones here, at the very bottom of the page.

    Avid Codecs

Otherwise, export a Quicktime Reference to your desktop and use Quicktime Pro to reencode it to a common codec between Macs and PCs. Maybe Animation, but expect a huge file.

Otherwise, you could try Raylight, which is supposed to encode to DVCPro HD on Windows. You can download the demo and test a small clip first to see if it works. Find it here:

    Hope this helps some.

    Michael.

    Dear Michael:

Thank you so much for taking the time to help us. I installed the avid codecs on the mac, but the quicktime file, once imported into FCP, still shows the same error (FCP says the timeline settings are wrong, asks me to change them to match the imported file, and then I get nothing but white frames). Exporting a quicktime reference from within the PC that has the footage makes sense, except that I can’t think of how to reencode the file for a Mac that preserves the 720P HD quality (necessary for the color correction in FCP and eventual output to HD).

I’m a bit lost about the use of Raylight…why do I need to re-encode my dvcpro hd footage in the PC with the Avid with Raylight? The footage is on a windows machine already, and plays perfectly well on the avid timeline…the problem is exporting the footage to a file that I can then import into the mac with the FCP. As of now, Avid cannot create a single file out of the timeline, and when I create smaller chunks that I could later import into FCP, the files do not play, either on the PC, or in the MAC (which continues to give me the error about matching settings in the timeline, even though I chose the preset dvcpro HD 720 pn, which is exactly what the footage is).

    Dear Michael:

That did it! After installing the avid codecs for the MAC and rebooting, the exported file using “same as source” settings and the avid codec was imported into FCP without a problem. Thank you so much for your help.
