Cannot capture footage from Sony HDR-FX1?
I am unable to connect to my Sony HDR-FX1 camcorder. It is an HDV camera that uses firewire to transfer footage to the computer. I am using a late 2011 MacBook Pro/Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.4. When I look under the system profile I get this message: Warning: Unable to list Firewire Devices.
I am using a 4pin to 9pin cable I bought from Best Buy.
Can someone help me?

Hi Ryan,
Not a Mac user, so maybe this has nothing to do with the issue, but just a heads up that HDV cameras can also downconvert and output HDV footage as DV, and in the camera menu there is a setting that I think is called “iLink Convt” and you’d want that OFF to output HDV. The downconvert to DV is usually ON by default. The “VCR” setting should also be set to “HDV” and not “AUTO” for best results.

Thank you Jeff for this information. Do you think this would be why the camcorder is not showing up as being online. It says, “Capture Device Offline.”

When connecting to computer via 1394, a DV camera shows up as a “DV Device” and HDV shows up as “AVC Subunit” (on a PC). Two very different things. Not sure how Mac handles this.
So yes, if the NLE is trying to connect to an HDV camera and only finds DV, then it could say unit is offline.

It works! As it turns out, the cable I bought from Best Buy was bad. I ordered the same cable from eBay. (I actually ordered the ebay one first, got impatient, then drove to best buy and bought an “open item” cable).
It works great now. Thank you!

I’ve had several of those firewire 800 to 400 cables
and most of them never worked.now I just use an adapter.
