  • Cannot black tape or lay off video/audio in edit to tape

Posted by Erin Casper on June 7, 2008 at 1:05 am

    Hello.

I am having an issue with Edit to Tape in FCP 5.1.4. A few days ago my edit bay at work was disconnected to clear the space for a shoot and was reconnected today (I was not present either time). I am currently trying to edit to tape on a Sony DVW-A500, using my normal settings for this task but I am unable to black the tape or assemble edit. Instead, it only records color bars during any attempt to black or assemble edit, and I am getting audio playback but do not see the levels on the deck once I attempt to black or an assemble edit. I am only getting color bars on my external monitor and my Edit to Tape window says “Preview Disabled”. Otherwise, I have deck control when the Edit to Tape window is open; playback on a tape works (except that the black/assemble playbacks only show bars and no sound); and I am not receiving any error messages. There is no issue with playing down a timeline when the Edit to Tape window is not open. I have rebooted everything (computer, deck, etc.) several times to no avail. I imagine this is more of an issue with the hardware and how everything is going in and out of the Kona and hooked up, and I am no expert on that.

Thanks in advance. I will do my best to clarify or elaborate more on the issue if needed.

Check In the AJA Control Panel> Control> Default Video Out.
    You my have “Test Pattern”.

Yes, it was on test pattern! Thank you very much. What should the setting typically on? Or does it vary from setup to setup?

    Hi Erin,
I have always set Black as default output, so when there is not video going out, the monitor always is in sync. You an have a black for years and this will never damage your CRT. If you let a fix signal (ie bars) for a long time, in the end the phosphor get impregnated. This is what happens in the studio monitors when they always play video with the TC on top of the image. After one or two years you end up with the mark of the TC printed in the screen even if you are not displaying it.
If you would have bars for long time (long) the left side of your CRT, where the most brighting bars are situated, would suffer much more than the right side. No good for the monitor at all.
    Cheers,
    rafael
