Cannot achieve smooth playback on my editing platform
I have a new editing platform that should be very good, but I cannot get it to playback by projects without jerkiness or at decent video quality. If I encode and playback elsewhere (ex: on a WDTV Live or even on YouTube or Vimeo) the quality and smoothness is just fine. But on my editing PC it is not.
First, here is my rig:
Adobe Premiere CS4 latest versions
Dell Studio XPS
Windows 7
Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz
12.0GB RAM
OS drive is 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black
Footage drive is a 3-drive RAID 0 array of Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB 7200 RPM 2.0TB drives (6TB total)Here are the symptoms:
I render everything in the timeline and then play it back. It is “jerky”. For example, I have some Adobe After Effects animations of photos moving slowly across the screen and they are not smooth, but rather move in a slightly stepwise fashion.
I then encode to a final file (say a H.264 output destined for Vimeo) and it still seems jerky.
HOWEVER, if I play that same file back off the WDTV using a much slower hard drive (a MyBook Elite 1.5TB portable drive connected with USB 2.0) it is perfect — pristine video quality and rock solid smooth. No jerkiness at all.

Any ideas on what the problem might be or how I might be able to diagnose it?

Hi Neil,
The culprit is most likely is the video card.
ATI drivers have many issues with Premiere these days. The solution has usually been to install previous versions. If you have an ATI card (which I’m guessing you have) check the AMD website for a previous version download before looking any further.

Try turning off all the GUI gubbins in Win 7 – those lovely little soft edges and dissolves that mean nothing to editors but almost almost hog and clog the cpu even at Core i7 level. As Vince rightly says, a better (and more compatible) graphics card will definitely help. But I found that Windows 7 smoothy technology was the real culprit so you might try this first.

Okay, I tried both suggestions:
1. First, rolled the video driver back. That didn’t work as it gave me the GPUSniffer error and wouldn’t run Premiere.
2, So, I updated to the very latest driver (I have an ATI HD Radeon 4800 card). Now Premiere works again, but still laggy.
3. I turned off all the Windows display stuff.
It is still just as laggy. What is the best video card for Premiere?

Other posts on the forum point to the NVidia Quadro CX as a kind of best option for CS4 – although it’s quite pricey. Certainly the Quadro series of cards gets high ratings amongst users in general.
I have a 9600GT playing through a Core i7 950 64bit PC which works ok but is a fair bit cheaper. A lot depends on what you want to pay – bang for bucks as they say! As I use a decklink card for final output, I’m less bothered about a less than perfect lcd video display.
Have you tried an alternative card from ATI – maybe an Nvidia? It might be worth it before you go platinum card shopping.
