    Hi there!

I’ve been working on a PP CS5 project for the last couple of weeks and I was already pretty advanced with the editing. Especially with one particular sequence. Now when I try to open this specific sequence PP crashes. It doesn´t happen the same with any other sequence in the project.

In the beginning I couldn´t even open the PP project because last time when I saved the project I was working on that sequence. So PP started loading the project but it took it 5 seconds to crash. Then I tried to open one of the several copies that I had and It worked, I could open the project because PP didn´t have to load that sequence since last time when I saved that specific copy I wasn´t working on the “corrupted” sequence. But once I´m on this project and I try to open this “corrupted” sequence where I have the 90% of my work PP crashes again.

I deleted the files of the preferences folder of PP but It didn´t work. I tried to import this sequence from a new project but it can´t import it. I didn´t try to reinstall PP, could it help? Could it help if I update to CS6?

    Anyone with a similar problem?

    I’m using Mac OS X version 10.6.8 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

    Thanks in advance.

    Juan

I have experienced similar issues. Most of the time my root cause is related to using compressed files in the timeline; MP3 audio is especially problematic. Also, older versions of Premiere would crash if a 48kHz audio file was imported to a 44.1kHz sequence, and vice versa. This has been resolved in CS6, but I don’t know about CS5.

Given the other things you have tried, the only other options are to look for an auto-saved copy (which may have been overwritten at this point), or a down-rev version (assuming you saved multiple revisions).

    Thanks for replying Ivan!

Actually I was working with some weird shitty audio files recorded with a mobile phone. The extension is 3gp and the frequency 8000Hz! That may have been the problem. However they have been in the timeline for one week and it was working fine until a couple of days ago when it started doing some strange things, like taking a few seconds to do simple things like trimming.

Regarding the video files I´m mostly working with the native files recorded with the 5D. But there some other video files in the timeline with different formats, codecs, frame rates… Could that be an issue with the CS5?

I opened the oldest autosaved version but I have the same problem. I can open the project but not the sequence in that project. Any solution?

If I open the project with the CS6 you think that could fix the problem? I have to recover this sequence!

    Thanks again mate.

A 30-day trial of CS6 can be downloaded for free. I am not sure that it will resolve the issue, though.

The codecs you are using are not editing-friendly. Premiere Pro will usually be OK with compressed footage in a simple sequence. The program bogs down and is prone to crashing when the timeline gets more complex. Transcoding the source footage is your best option.

In the future be sure to save projects using a new revision number at least once a day.

    Hi again!

    I have some news.

I’m using two external hard disks for this project. In a 6TB WD RAID 0 connected via Firewire 800 where I have all the footage. I’m using a 2TB Seagate as Scratch Disk. I’ve been doing several tests and I found out that when I disconnect the 2TB HD I can open the sequence perfectly. I think it’s because some preview files located in the 2TB HD were creating some issues. I also tried to open the project with the CS6 and it works perfectly connected with the 2TB HD as scratch disk. Now I´m working again with the CS5. I deleted the preview files from the 2TB HD and it works. I will try to render some previews and see what happens. Does this make any sense? Or it may be that the HD is not working correctly?

I’ve been a final cut user for several years and I changed to PP, among other things, because you were supposed to work fine with native files. Can I ask you what would be your workflow for this particular project in which you have to edit one hour long documentary movie using mainly files from the 5D?

    Thank you!

Good to hear you were able to resolve the issue. I haven’t worked with 5D footage so my recommendations are more general. At the very least, record/convert audio to wav files (preferably at a common frequency). Regarding video, Premiere works fairly well with a variety of codecs, but low compression or uncompressed formats can be processed more easily. If you would rather not transcode your source files to a different codec, consider converting to all I-frame.

That’s just my opinion based on trying to reduce the risk of system crashes. There are several archived threads that provide more specific guidance regarding 5D footage.
