Canaon AVCHD Workflow
After looking around the forums a bit I couldnt really find what I was looking for. None of this stuff is my gear or footage, all belongs to the company Im currently working for. All footage is shot on the Canon Vixia HF200 to SDHC cards. Then brought into FCP thought L&T as Prores422:1920×1080. Footage is then cut as Prores422:1920×1080 60i to be export as 1280×720 H.264 for youtube. When it comes to storage space for everything I am very limited, trying to get more hard drives is like trying to get a little kid to brush their teeth. I feel like my work flow to this point is pretty decent, however, any thoughts there are always appreciated. Its when it comes to archiving and backup Im feeling a little lost. I almost feel like I should run the 1920×1080 footage though compressor to size it down to 1280×720, Does that give the footage a double compression? Or if I should just trash it all and keep the “tape back up” Thoughts?

What are you doing with the content of your cards? Definitely keep copies of the card contents and project files. Keep pushing for that storage space. If the footage is important to the company, they need to invest in a storage solution!
I’ve shot with the Vixia HF200 and I use ShotPut Pro to create a clone of the card contents and keep it on my RAID 5. I also have a copy on another hard drive as backup. Do the same with the project files.

I do have card back ups and back ups of the project files. Im not as concerned about those files. It comes down to what I should do with the footage after it as been ingested, cut and exported. Its it worth keeping the .mov files or should I just down size them to 1280×720 or trash them altogether? This is all for the sake of saving space. If I had it my way I would just have another set of drives, but the chances of that are slim.

after it as been ingested, cut and exported Put put a Master Self Contained of the program. Dump the raw footage.
You have multi backups of original card files.
You have a digital Master.You don’t need the footage @ that point. Re-load if you need it again later.
