  • Can You Suggest An Output Workflow?

I’m looking for suggestions on the workflow to output a commercial I’ve cut in HD in FCP. I shot 35mm, transferred to DVCPRO HD 1080i. Digitized via firewire from Panasonic AJHD1400 and cut in 1080i timeline. The commercial must be dubbed to Beta SP for distribution.

I have a Sony UVW 1800 BetaSP deck as well as the 1400.

    Here are my questions/concerns:

    a) I don’t have an HD converter/breakout box or anything to convert the HD sequence straight out of FCP and into the Beta deck. I only have the AJA IO box.

    b) I can output the sequence to the 1400 (after I figure out why audio is not getting to it via fireware.) Then, downcovert from the 1400 to the 1800 BetaSP deck I suppose.

    or

    c) Should I create an SD 10-bit timeline and bring the 1080i sequence in, render it, then output the SD sequence to BetaSP?

Of course, since I shot 35mm, transferred to HD, I want to maintain the best quality SD dubs as possible. I’m hoping somebody out there as some great advice here that will keep any degradation to a minimum. Unfortunately, I just don’t have a good understanding of how much compression/decompression is taking place in these workflows, and I want the cleanest output possible with the resources I currently have available.

    Thanks!

    I’m on FCP 4.5
    Mac G5 2.0 dual processors
    2.5g RAM
    1.25T RAID Array
    AJA IO
    Panasonic AJHD1400 deck
    Sony UVW 1800 BetaSP deck

    Brad,

    BING!!! That’s it!!!

Of course it going to be letterboxed top and bottom, but it’ll look great and be excellent quality.

That’s what I hoped I’d hear! So simple. And I do want letterbox. Thanks, David.

David’s way is cool, but since I like to play devil’s advocate, I’d go the other way. I’d let the deck do the down conversion as I like those things to be done in hardware. You will have to fiddle with some settings in the deck though. If you aren’t comfortable with it, then plopping your sequence in a 10 bit timeline is fine.
