• Can you stretch an image’s width only?

I’m trying to create an effect whereby different colour layers stretch different amounts from each other. I’ve figured out how to create a separate track for each colour, but am having trouble with stretching them.

I’ve been using the pan/zoom dialogue, but I can’t get it to achieve the effect I want. I ensure I have “maintain aspect ratio” turned off, but that doesn’t help. If I just zoom in, then the height stretches along with the width (obviously). If, however, I move the sides of the frame independently of the top of the frame, then the top of the image comes in, leaving me with black bars at the top and the bottom. If I then move the top so that there are no longer black bars at the top, then it actually zooms in on the image, meaning that the output image is stretched in both width and height.

What I’m looking to do is to stretch just the width. Am I being really stupid and missing something obvious?

That’s because it’s not called Pan/Zoom it’s called Pan/Crop and cropping does not stretch, it just changed the view port through which you see the video.

If you want to stretch you need to use Track Motion and disable Lock Aspect Ratio and Scale About Center.

It was just me being stupid and missing something obvious, then. Thanks.

No, it was you using the wrong tool. Pan/Crop doesn’t stretch. Track Motion does. The subtlety between the two tools is not always obvious since they both can be used to zoom.

That’s what I mean, I was missing the obvious thing of using the right tool for the job.

    Thanks again.

Oh yea. But it’s not that obvious. Lots of people get confused by having seemingly two ways to do the same thing That’s all I was pointing out. Glad it’s working for you.
