Can you rename a project in Avid?
Posted by Gabe Cotto on May 23, 2008 at 8:05 pmHello All,
Okay, so I’m told by my fellow editors at our shop that it is not possible to rename a project in Avid. First is this true? And if it is, is there a work around? I need to rename the project because of the way we do archiving. I have created a new project, named it correctly, and transferred over the bins from the incorrectly named project. I was going to delete the “bad” project, but then I was told that would delete all of my media. Can someone please help me out. I’m a FCP editor working in an Avid world right now and finding it very frustrating that Avid can’t do something as simple as renaming a project. Please help me out if you can.
Thank you for your time,

May 23, 2008 at 9:01 pmYou can rename projects in Avid… you have to do it at the OS level, but….
an easier method is to create a new project and just copy all of the bins (.avb files) at the OS level from the old project folder into the new project folder.
You can also delete the project and you will not lose any media. The media is associated to the Master Clip metadata (living in a Bin) by Source Tape and TC. The project name has nothing to do with it. However, if you perform a Media Tool search or list the “project” column in your bin you will see the name of the project that the clips were originally captured into. Until you re-capture, consolidate, etc.

May 24, 2008 at 6:23 amKenton’s approach is indeed the best.
The guys at your work have put you a bit wrong really. Deleting a project will do nothing to the media (aside from remove your direct access to it as there’s no longer bins, but it can be found in Media Tool still).
The only problem with Kenton’s approach (or, in fact, actually renaming a project) is that the clips will still be associated with the old project in the Media Tool. But this, in practice, is unlikely to be a problem. If you really want to, it is possible to ‘Consolidate’ all your clips into a new project (it will essentially copy them and change their project association).

May 24, 2008 at 1:59 pmWhile it is true that you can rename the project at the OS level. Avid will ignore that change. As with bins, Avid has hidden metadata that it looks at. This is all part of the media management that is actually a big plus.
If you want to see what I’m saying in action, do a little test. Create a dummy project and call it Test A. Then quit out of Avid an rename it to Test B at the desktop level. Now restart Avid. When you get to the project window you will only see Test A as an option.
It’s the same for a bin. Make a copy of your bin at the system level. Call it whatever you want. Now try to open it in Avid while the original bin is open. You can’t. This is because Avid sees it as the same bin. This will also catch you when you pull a bin from the attic if you aren’t aware of it.

May 25, 2008 at 5:53 amActually, if you rename both the project and the project setting file, this should work.
Bins are a different story, as they have unique IDs.

May 27, 2008 at 2:18 pmThank you all. I apologize for the late reply. I was enjoying a nice long holiday weekend. I ended up following Kenton’s advice. I created a new project (named it properly) and dragged the old project into it at the OS level.
As always thank you all for your help and support.

June 4, 2008 at 8:30 pmWhile we’re talking about renaming anyway, I’m trying to rename the tapename that is attached to a certain clip. (I accidentally put in the wrong tapename before capturing). I was able to rename it afterwards in Avid Xpress Pro, but now I’m working in Media Composer I can’t see that option anymore. Anybody knows how to do that?

menu when you right click (PC) on the clip. -Jason

Dylan,
I just posted a new post on having a problem doing this. I’ve done it before…and I’m able to do it with some clips, but for some reason there is this one clip that will not consolidate with any other project association than the one it currently has.
