Can you PLEASE point me in the right direction.
Posted by Alexmurphy on January 24, 2006 at 10:19 amCan SOMEONE…. ANYONE please help me. I have been given a project to complete at work, and to say the least…. im having a little trouble!!!
I have to take a video clip of a car driving down a road, I need to cut it out and place it in a video scence with nothing in the foreground/background. So that the car is on a White background.
Where do i start? is it masking in Aftereffects? Frame by frame in Photoshop. Or do i need a plugin…. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Anwers on a postcard to the stressed geezer at work.
THANKS

January 24, 2006 at 12:47 pmWelcome to the wonderful world of “roto” or “rotoscoping.”
In short, this is the laboriously tedious process of going frame to frame painting out the background (for simplicity’s sake in describing it).
You could output all the frames as a numbered image sequence from AE to then take it into Photoshop to remove the background — if you are suicidal. If you are not, you soon will be if you try it like that. (Oh, it works and I know some who use Photoshop but I wouldn’t do it that way.)
You can use SilhouetteFX Roto (much recommended if you wish to keep your sanity and you can learn more about it at https://www.silhouettefx.com which is the home of the product).
Best regards,

January 24, 2006 at 12:58 pmI hate to have to see you spend more money if you can’t afford it, but
After Effects lacks in the rotoscoping department (which is what you need done). It is one of the areas many were hoping would be upgraded on this latest release given Adobe bought a company that had good roto tools.I think those will make it into the next version of After Effects, but until then you really should strongly consider how much time you can save by buying and learning how to use Silhouette’s roto app. It is $295 for the AE plugin version.
https://www.silhouettefx.com/buy/home.php?cat=5Like I said though the next version of AE will likely address rotoscoping with the technology that was aquired in a buyout, but until then this would serve you well.

January 24, 2006 at 1:17 pmI just want to say THANK YOU for putting me on the right track. I’ve just had a look at Silhouette. Without asking 100 and one questions, whats the final quality like when using Silhouette?
My source is a HD B-ROLL of some Jaguar footage. The final output will be for a plasma screen. Is there any “moving examples” of Silhouette. From looking at the site, I gather “Rotoscoping” is about making outlines/paths for moving images…
Is there anything else that I should be considering software wise?
Many thanks again… Dark cloud moving slowly away now :O)
Alex.

January 24, 2006 at 1:24 pmSilhouetteFX Roto was written by an Academy Award-winning team of FX pioneers who wrote Elastic Reality (and sold it to Avid). While there, they wrote Avid Marquee and a few other things. These guys work with film companies all the time and their stuff is well beyond video-level. Trust me, do not waste a moment worrying about the quality — it will be there.
Instead, worry about your sanity as you begin this.
Be afraid, be very afraid…

January 24, 2006 at 1:56 pmHow’s “King Kong” fare in your book? Seriously. They used it. If it is good enough for Peter Jackson’s crew I think you’ll be pleased with the results.
