Can you play an NTSC DVD on a computer in Europe?
Will NTSC DVDs play on computers in Europe – with out the PAL conversion? There’s a long story behind this involving a favor and the exchange of minute quantities of cash – but rather than bore you to tears, I thought I’d just ask. A friend mentioned it was possible.

You do get a few plays on new machines but due to region codes the computer will ask you to choose PAL or NTSC after that it is restricted.
However a lot of standalone DVD players will play both NTSC and PAL disks and do a conversion so you can watch NTSC on a PAL TV set.
The best thing is to do a conversion.

I imagine the poster is talking about burning a DVD in the US to send to Europe; region codes are really a separate issue. Basically almost all modern DVD players and TVs in Europe can deal with NTSC discs; the opposite (PAL in the US) is much more of a problem.

Hi,
ALL standalone PAL DVD players will play NTSC discs (region coding aside). They output a signal with PAL color space and NTSC frame rate and resolution. Most PAL TV’s manufactured since about mid 1990 can play that signal.

Yes it will, as long as the region coding does not interfere. If it’s a burned disc, then I’d say you’re A-OK fine.

Yep,
I still want Graemme’s software for future jobs, but we were under the gun to ship ship ship and none of the sixty dvd’s came back from numerous European destinations. Made me nervous as has heck, but no returns, or complaints in 9 months.
