  • Can you nest interlaced and progressive projects?

Posted by Rick Mac on August 11, 2007 at 3:56 pm

I’m working on a Prom Video that was shot DV 29.97 interlaced.
I like the way that some of the segments look when I render test out to 30 progressive. It looks at bit more like a fantasy. But some of the segments need to look like reality (interlaced).

I would rather edit the video in segments and then drop the nested projects into a master project so that I render only once.

Now for my question. Will mixing interlaced and progressive nested projects work?

My workflow as of now would be to set my project settings for a given segment to either interlaced or progressive according to the look I want. After all segments have been edited, pull the veg files into my master project using DV 29.97 interlaced on the master project.

    1) Will the progressive nested projects retain their status as progressive even thought the master project is set interlaced?

    2) Will I have problems when I author the master project to DVD Architect? I was planning on rendering my Architect stream interlaced.

If my workflow is flawed perhaps someone else has done this before and can suggest a good one.

    Thanks for your help.

    Regards, Rick.

the progressive segments will be interlaced regardless of what you do to them if you’re rendering to interlaced. You can’t have an interlaced DVD with some progressive segments and some interlaced. You can mix them on a timeline, but ultimately an interlaced project will have to be deinterlaced for a progressive DVD and a progressive project will have to be interlaced for an interlaced DVD.
That said, you could render the progressive segments as progressive segments, thus tossing the resolution, then import those segments into Vegas, or you could have a progressive project and nest it into Vegas. I’m not sure the effect would be the same, not having done this to the point of rendering. I have nested them, and it appears fine on a monitor, but I haven’t rendered.
Architect will have no problems with a master file created from both P and I content whether the master file is P or I.

    Spot,

    Thanks for fielding my question.
I was rack-focusing my brain trying to figure this one out.
Of course I did have my doubts that trying to mix I & P into a
master project would retain the settings for both.

I think what I will do is to create a Interlaced Master Project and for the segments that require Progressive, pre-render as progressive.
Or I may just do the entire thing progressive. Before I do that I will render out a test segment both I & P to see how much resolution is lost.

Thanks for your time and best regards, Rick.
