  • can you manually delete preview (.PRV) files?

Posted by Ginger Gentile on February 25, 2013 at 5:53 pm

I am getting the hours long “media pending” message when I open a project–stuck on file 618–in the past I kept this from happening from deleting rendered files from the sequence menu, but I can´t do that until the project opens, which it won´t. Can I manually delete all the files that are in the .PRV files (about 70GB)? or will that cause a problem?

Also, is there a media manager are similar where I can remove from the project all the clips that are not associated with certain sequences? I started with 40 hours of material, now at final stage (just exporting omfs, etc) so there is about 38 hours of material that doesn´t need to be there.
    Thanks!

Yes, you can go to the folder that holds the preview files and delete them. The reason most folks render a preview file in PrP is if they will not playback in real time, usually due to effects that are on the clip. So that is the consequence of deleting preview files that are related to your timeline.

I like to clean out that folder after I complete a project.

Is clip 618 a clip you have rendered? If so try just deleting that one. If not, maybe the clip has gotten corrupted, in which case you may want to reimport it into the project.

    Hi Tom,
Did as you said, manually deleted the files and project opened with no problems, only asked me where the render files where and I clicked offline.
Each time I tried to open it got stuck on another file, usually around 618-630 (and they were not rendered files).

Yes, now they are working fine. Deleting manually did the trick when Premier got stuck on consolidating the media.
This is a solution that I can recommend.
