Can we run windows XP on the new Intelbased MacBook and iMac
Posted by Mody on January 16, 2006 at 11:37 amHi All
Now that Apple has Intel in the new laptops can we run Windows XP on it so we have best of both the worlds.
For me I love windows for the large games titles available and use Mac for the rest of the automation stuff
regards

January 16, 2006 at 1:05 pmThat was discussed when the Intel switchover was announced and yes that should be entirely possible. Create two boot disks, one for Windows XP and one for Apple.
I can’t remember who said it last year from Apple but a company official stated that they would not prevent Mac users from installing Windows on the Intel machines, but there would be no way to install the Mac OS on any Intel based machine but Apple. The Mac OS will probably look for a “signature” to ensure that’s installing onto an Apple product.
I actually plan to try this when I pick up a MacBook Pro.

January 16, 2006 at 1:39 pmAccording to a number of sources the new Intel Macs are using Intel EFI firmware instead of BIOS, which means you won’t be able to run Win XP on them as its current 32bit version does not support EFI booting.
EFI is a new firmware which Windows Vista will apparently support when its out. Some Linux builds have some level of support for it too.

Good catch on that. So I guess we’ll wait for the next version of Windows to come out. I mean, it’s about due right? Every 5-7 years?

I’ve always thought that the ‘best’ part of windows was not having anything to do with it. 😉

January 17, 2006 at 7:58 amThis is the “devil’s bargain” made years ago when Bill Gates rescued Apple from the abyss by infusing mucho capital. Better learn to live with it Arnie! Not having to buy software anymore for two separate operating systems would be a definite plus!
