Can this specific effect be achieved in AE? or am I better off using something else?

https://vimeo.com/channels/eyecandy/207218642I was particularly intrigued by the first 9 seconds, how the 3d effect follows the beat. Can this be done on AE? If not, what other program should I use (Maya, 3ds max)? Any tips of being able to create that effect would be great too. Thanks in advance for your help.

You could do that in After Effects, but you’ll need a third-party plugin. These are good candidates to try:

not sure either Mir of Free form would be able to render out those shadows. They can pull out that effect, but it would be a lot easier to set up in a 3d ap.

this is just a closeup of some kind of substance on top of a speaker.
