  • can the timeline scroll automatically?

Posted by Doug Buckser on November 7, 2005 at 10:55 pm

    G’day,

My wife is learning to edit on Final Cut Pro 4.5 and asked whether it’s possible for the timeline to scroll, so that the editing point is always centred. That is, when playing through the project, can the timeline scroll or do we need to keep pressing the right pointing button on the right edge of the timeline?

With my vast experience of a month on FCP 4.5, I didn’t know. I read through the general help and a couple of manuals and couldn’t find the answer.

We moved over from Vegas to Final Cut Express a couple of years ago. Vegas does this, but I haven’t seen it on either FCE or FCP. Is this feature supported?

    Thanks for your help.

    Regards,
    Doug

    Doug,

This was previously a feature of FCP but alas now it has been removed. I guess it was eating up too much open GL or screen redraw power or something.

Short answer. No more timeline scrollling in FCP 5.0

If you really need to keep an area of the playhead in the window, then you can zoom out the timeline so it includes your edit. I guess they didn’t see it as a great need since the playhead snaps to where ever you stop/pause.

    G’day,

    Thanks for your help.

The good news is that I can answer my wife’s question. The bad news is that the answer isn’t what she wants to hear.

The good news about sleeping on the sofa is that NFL is on tonight…..

    Regards,
    Doug
