  • Can Sound Forge 8 run from a non-Admin account ?

Hello, I’ve had the product running on my own account (XP Admin) for ages.
I had recently set up a limited-user account for my son and he’d mentioned he’d like to
run Sound Forge. However, when starting the app. from his account, it asks for the product serial.
I attempted to add it once, but it wasn’t accepted.

The license info in the registry, in HKLM/software/sony/sound forge/license ( << paraphrased from memory) is good and proper, since it runs without issue from my account. Is it a general restriction that the product need to be run from admin account, or is there something else I need to do in my son's limited account. TIA for any info.

While I don’t know the specific answer for this, you might do a workaround. I routinely use the ADMIN account, but setup my personal account with admin privs. This allows me to not rely on the built in admin account of any Windows version. There are numerous posts on the Internet about how to setup you personal account with virtual admin privledges. This might satisfy the needs.

However, it would be really great if Sony clarified their need for admin privledges, and clearly stated that they will load with standard USER privledges. UNIX routinely does this, Windows has only recently been doing it. It’s time, with WIndows 7, to make this happen. Demand it, for the security of your hard build machine.

Thanks for responding. I agree, it would be great if Sony officially stated this info somewhere.

I’m running it on XP Pro, SP3. There’s the built-in admin account, my own user account
(admin privileges), and my son’s account (non-admin). It was installed and works OK on mine
but when I tried to start it on my son’s account it asked for the product key. I haven’t gone any
further with it yet, except snoop around the system a little.

Some products leave license info in \documents and settings\userid\application data\product_id
(such as the Tmpgenc mpeg encoder products) but I couldn’t see anything for Sony.

In the registry you see license info in the Hkey_Local_Machine key, which should persist across all
    userid’s.

So I’m still in the dark. If I find out anymore, I’ll update this post.
    thanks,
    Dave
