I realize I’m wading in the very deep end of the smart-pool here, but I’ve thought about this too. Doesn’t the 1.33 aspect ratio of your discussion (eg., 960×720) have anything to do with the aspect ratio of the CCD we’re recording onto? In other words, the same reason that cinemascope and anamorphic began–to efficiently utilize the 1.33 space in a frame of 35mm film, then stretch it out to widescreen?

Just a thought. But thanks for the info.

No, they’re different. In DVCPROHD the sensor is 16:9 and the lens isn’t anamorphic.

So the captured image is electronically horizontally scaled to 4:3 aspect purely for recording because of the frame size constraints of the DVCPROHD format at the time it was invented.
