….the right direction to get a good speaker system for my FCP,Mac system. I’m buildig a new set up and I need some good speakers. I’m going to be editing afor a web-site company and mostly pod-cast/on-line vids for web-sites. It will move to other editing things so I just want to be ready for the shift with having a good set of speakers now.

KRK Rokit 5 are awesome monitors at a great price. We have them in two of our suites right now and are adding them to our third suite shortly.

    http://www.musiciansfriend.com has them

What is your budget? I put in a set of KRK V4 last year and I have had a couple of audio engineers over and they love them. But they are $500 for a pair, which I thought were really expensive but high end guys think of that as a starting point.

How do those hook up the mac? Do you just plug them in and go? Do they come with a amp/volume control?

We run them off an AJA Kona card which is then connected to a Mackie board for volume control.

If you want to run them straight out of a Mac, you’ll need to pick up either a Stereo Mini to 2 channel 1/4″ cables or Stereo Mini to 2 channel RCA cables. For volume, you would simple set the speakers to 0db and then use your Mac Volume control.

ok.. does it mater which set of cable I use as far as sound quality? I was leaning towards the RCA’s!

Technically 1/4 will sound better because they’re balanced, but you’re coming off an unbalanced Mini source anyway, so I don’t think you’ll hear much difference. Make sure the cable is plenty long enough so you have enough to go from the Mac to whereever you’re doing to set up the speakers.
