  • Can rendering be faster on my system?

    Hi,

I’m running FCP 5.0 on a G5 2.33 with 2.5GB ram. Would adding more RAM or anything else help my rendering go faster?

I’ve been working on 2 – 2.5 hour projects shot on HDV then outputting via compressor to a NTSC Letterboxed DVD. Sometimes it takes 22 hours to render! Makes me nervous, if I did anything wrong, I would have wasted an entire day!

Is this just the way it is? Please help!

No, it won’t help your rendering speeds. That comes down to processor speed and hard-drive connection speed.

RAM would help you do the things you are actively working on. Like, if you open a clip, drag something in the timeline, or switch between programs. Anytime you do something like that and have to wait for the computer for a second, that’s a RAM issue.

I also have a Mac Mini and an eMac on the network. Would using Qmaster significantly help? I’m having a hard time understanding how to set-up a cluster…

    Thanks!

I don’t think so, Q-master is not dynamic so it will split the job 50/50 between computers and take alot longer.
You can chop up the piece and have the mini just do credits or opening title. (small sections that open and end in black)
It might save you a little time.

    Good luck

HDV rendering is SLOW – It’s a big frame.

Some people have reported a speed increase from working in HDDVCPro – FCP supports hardware acceleration for this codec, so you certainly get better RT response, but you’ll need to convert your footage – or capture at HDDVCPro using the component outs on the HDV Deck using an HD capture card, like Blackmagic or Kona.

In FCP, you don’t have to wait for the whole render to finish – you have probably noticed that if you cancel it, FCP keeps the rendered sections it has already done. On long FCP renders, I often stop and save a few times in a big render, in case of power failure or similar. Of course, you can’t do this with compressor. Compressor is slow but thorough – you can export an MPEG-2 from fcp, which may be quicker.
