  • Can PremPro Edit QT files natively?

Posted by David Oulashian on June 16, 2005 at 1:03 am

    Hi,

I have a client that wants to edit quicktime files — already capture with Final Cut — in PremPro. I’ve only used PremPro with standard DV files. Can it edit QT files without external hardware (software only) or do I need some sort of hardware (Blackmagic, etc)?

    Thanks for any info.

    Hi David

The editing modes in premiere pro needs to support the same memory format FCP does, if not it will have a red bar and my not be optimized for playback giving you grief.

The bluefish444 cards work with v210 memory format but also have the ability to playback any imported file format from the timeline in real time, with out the need to render for SDI or analog preview.
Sadly you will need the card installed however to make this feature work.

    Hi Paul,

You lost me on memory formats/v210 etc. Can you explain a little more? It does sound like you are saying I would need some external hardware to make it work.

    Thanks,

    To restate Pauls’ post:
Premiere Pro can edit QT files on the timeline. However, because Premiere Pro doesn’t handle QT natively, there may be performance problem with playback of the QT files. If you take the time to render the timeline, instead of relying on real-time playback, you shouldn’t have any problems.

Some capture cards use QT natively, so if you install one of those and use the settings for the card, you may be able to get real-time performance through the card.

Now, to be honest, depending on what codec the QT files are in, there’s a good chance you won’t have to worry much about performance. You may not be able to get as many layers of real-time as you would with DV, but Premiere Pro handles QT reasonably well.

My experience is that if the files are Quicktime DV files, then it will handle them in real time. Otherwise, no.

Even with the Quicktime DV files you may get a red bar… but on a reasonable system the files will playback realtime, in full res, with no hiccups. You may have to render in the end but it’s superquick.
