  • Can Premiere handle HDCAM video?

We are considering changing from Avid Media Composer (due to the cost) to Adobe Premiere. What I/O boxes are out there to help it ‘talk’ to a HDCAM deck? I only see DV and HDV as video options can it do any higher resolutions? In the training videos it only talks about laying back to a camera or file format. We shoot mainly HDCAM.

I think the tape in/out functionality depends on the hardware you choose. I have a Aja Kona3 and there is deck control and video and output, but the codec choices are very limited. I actually still digitize using Final Cut Pro for ProRes then edit in Premiere. The other cards may be different. I know Blackmagic Decklink allows input and deck Control and so does matrox. Don’t know If that helps.

You may want to research Walter Biscardi’s experience with trying to get tape in and out of Premiere . He has had an ongoing battle using a variety of hardware like AJA and BMD. I dont think he is very happy with how its working. If memory serves I believe he also uses FCP to digitize of tape when using Premiere. Good luck.

We have an imac with Adobe software and the Blackmagic Ultrastudio 3D thunderbolt I/O. I’ve had no problems controlling/capturing/editing to tape with HDCAM, HDCAM SR and DigiBeta decks.
