Can other programs use video captured by Vegas?
Posted by Mil Bogo on March 28, 2008 at 7:27 amHi Guys,
Learning more about Vegas and liking it.
Can other programs use video captured by vegas ie .m2T files and visa versa. Can Vegas use files captured by Avid?If not – can you capture in a format that both both programs use?
Kind regards,

March 29, 2008 at 11:00 amAFAIK Vegas does not capture as a proprietary format like Premiere or Avid or some of the others. So if capturing as a DV-AVI files you probably could open that file in another program.
I’ve never worked with the m2t files before so can’t really help you there. My suggestion would be to try it. Capture into Vegas then try to open in anoher program.

March 29, 2008 at 2:38 pmVegas can open some of the codecs Avid uses, others, it cannot. you can download an Avid codec pack from freecodecs.com
mxf, aaf, are a couple of easy formats. you can also capture in Vegas, Premiere, Canopus, and those files can be converted to Avid’s codec.
Can you indicate the specific workflow that necessitates Avid in the mix?Douglas Spotted Eagle

March 31, 2008 at 12:39 amHi guys,
I will explain what I am trying to achieve.
I am trying to decide which video program to use and I want to “future proof” my video captures – incase I decide to change systems.
My fear is having all this captured video, then I decide to change to another system in the future – but cannot use my material. Is there a way I can do this? ie capture in a neutral format?
Kind regards,
Mil. -

March 31, 2008 at 10:11 pmHello Mil, Yes you can capture with Vegas as HDV in the .m2t format and import these into Avid media composer, Adobe Premier pro and any other program that supports HDV. The .m2t format is the native format for HDV cameras. Avid, Premier and Vegas’s newer releases can edit this format with out problems as long as the computer is fairly fast. For slower machines Vegas can convert to Cineform avi which is a lossless intermediate format and can be re-rendered several times without much degregation. Avid media composer uses their DNxHD format in the same way. In answer to your question, the .m2t format is a good safe way to archive your videos. You can also export this format back to tape using the HDV camera if hard drive space is an issue. Danny
