  • Can not insert AVI into Vegas Project

Posted by Jonathan Hay on July 8, 2007 at 5:33 pm

I’m trying to insert a home video into my vegas project. I can view the video in windows media player and in my Nero player and it plays fine. However, I have not been able to insert it into vegas (I have version 6). I believe it was originally encoded w/ Nero Video Decoder. Any ideas?

Here is a link to the file…

You need to find out what codec was used. Then you’ll need to find that codec in a format that Vegas can use. Vegas can’t use all codecs that Windows Media Player can use.

My client is an unavailable solider in Afganistan and probably does not know what codex was used anyway. Do you have any advice in finding out what codex was used for sure and then how I should go about to see if I can add this to Vegas?

GSpot says the codec used is XviD ISO MPEG-4.
I don’t use XviD so hopefully someone else has some suggestions for you.

    Hi Jonathan,

Here is a link to a free program that can examine your file
and tell you what codec is needed to play it.
Download the latest version. I don’t think it even has an installer
you just unzip the file and go to the directory that you unzipped to and double click on the gspot.exe file. By the way, that is the name of the program, gspot.

Let us know if this helps you. If not we will try somthing else.

    Regards, Rick.

Thanks for the link this is great.
In general is codecs.com a good sight for downloading codex’s after I know what to download? Do I have to worry about adware? Will all of them work with sony vegas or do I have to do something special?

    Hi,

[jonathan hay] “Do I have to worry about adware?”

Better use single codecs (xvid, divx, real alternative, quicktime
alternative, etc.) you need, instead of so called “codec packs”.
    Don’t install a codec you don’t need.

Codec packs may contain trojans, malwares.

If all else fails import the avi file into Nero, then export it from Nero as an mpeg. Although not the ideal way to go, it did the job.

    Hey Jonathan,

Can’t speak for everything on their website concerning ad-ware.
However, before posting I downloaded the codec myself and installed and scanned it.
I found no ad-ware with it. I scanned it with AVG Antivirus and
    Ad-aware 2007.

B>[jonathan hay] “Will all of them work with sony vegas or do I have to do something special?”

I don’t think you need to do anything at all to use the codec for
decoding (playback). However, for encoding you may need to go into custom settings to find the codec.

Perhaps someone else that has rendered to this format could give you better instructions.

    Regards, Rick.

How can one know whether Vegas can use certain codec (for instance DviX)
