Can Movie Studio 12 export same as my camera shot? (AVCHD 1920×1080 60p)
Posted by Scott Matthews on November 20, 2012 at 6:01 pmHi all, I’m still getting up to speed with video in general, so apologies for my novice questions!
My camera (a Sony NEX7) is set to shoot 60p. I just tried my first little project in Movie Studio 12, but I can’t seem to find an export to match.
I wound up selecting MainConcept / Internet HD 1080p — but it doesn’t look as good as my original, just wondering if you have any suggestions?

It’s quite natural to thing that you want to keep your footage in the same format until you understand that there are formats that are good for acquisition and there are formats that are good for delivery and they’re not always the same format. It is quite common that your camera will shoot in a format that your NLE cannot reproduce. Also since there is no way to deliver 60p footage you won’t find a render template for it.

That is a great start. Press the Customize Template… button and change the Frame rate to 59.940. That’s the frame rate for 60p. Also try increasing the Variable bit rate Average (bps) to match that of your camera footage. That will get the quality back up. Then save it and give it a name like Internet HD 1080-60p.

Thanks, but I don’t actually see 59.94 listed there — it stops at 29.97 — I just got Windows Properties on the .mts file, and there it does say 59fps.
Is there something I need to enable to render back out to 60p?

You can type it in. It’s an entry field.

November 21, 2012 at 12:19 amIs there a reason 60p isn’t available in the way that 60i seems to be?
Is that also the case in Vegas Pro?

There are no 60p devices to deliver to. DVD doesn’t support 60p. Blu-ray doesn’t support 60p. TV’s don’t support 60p. It’s easy enough to create a 60p template if you need one but for Vegas to ship a “standard” 60p template would require that there be a “standard” device to use but there isn’t one.
[Scott Matthews] “Is that also the case in Vegas Pro?”
Yes, the same is true for Vegas Pro.

You ARE able to generate a new file in ‘acquisition’ type quality. Just create a template for it yourself. Nothing is stopping you. The templates that come with Vegas are just a starting point. You can make new project presets and render templates.
The only limitation is that the codec you choose must support the parameters you want to use. For example, if you start with the Sony AVC render type and the AVCHD 1920×1080-60i template. That one has 59.940 (Double NTSC) in the frame rate drop down but it doesn’t let you change the Field Order to Progressive. You have to change the Video Format to AVC in order to change the field order. So there are limits.

November 21, 2012 at 2:32 pmThanks. I guess it just seems odd that there isn’t even one 60p output template among all the defaults…

It’s really not odd if you remember that the purpose of the program is to edit and ‘deliver’ the video and there is no 60p delivery format so why would you make a template for it?

I guess I see the purpose as creating new video files — and ‘delivery’ is just one potential outcome for the files you create, not the only outcome.
For example, you might simply want to archive the output, import it into another editor, or whatever.
Anyhow, I think it’s odd there isn’t a 60p template — and you don’t think it’s odd — so: vive la différence! 🙂
