  • Can Motion do effects masks?

Posted by Marc on August 21, 2005 at 4:10 pm

    Hello, everyone,

I usually do all my post work in the node-based Digital Fusion where I can restrict the area affected by a certain effect (e.g. blur) by simply adding an effects mask to the node. This can be feathered, inverted etc. So far I have not been able to recreate this in Motion. I guess it’s simple, but I just can’t seem to get my head around working in layers instead of nodes. So, how do I do it (if it is at all possible)?

    Thanks for your help,
    Marc

The toolbar gives you access to square/circular or bezier masks. The masks can be feathered with up to 50 pixels – but it seems to work better with applying a blur to the mask. Check the manual for details…

I haven’t found a way to only use a filter on a portion of an image (effect mask) but the work around is pretty simple.

    Place the footage over itself.
apply the filter to the top most copy
mask it to reveal the original unaffected copy underneath

    And FYI
“The masks can be feathered with up to 50 pixels”
The masks (and shapes) can be feathered from -1000 to 1000

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for your help. I already thought of this work-around.
But the beauty of Fusions effect masks is that feathering affects the strength of the effect, eg. going smoothly from unblurred to blurred.

Ah, well, maybe I should file a feature request…

    Cheers,
    Marc
