Can Live HTML find clips on Google Drive?
Hello-
We are FILM Archives Inc., a stock footage library using a hosted dedicated Linux server running CatDV with Live HTML to serve up our thousands of Quicktime clips to the public. Running a bit low on hosted disk storage space and looking at future (more economical) options for extending disk storage.
Does anyone happen to know if Live HTML can be configured to find
media clips stored on a Google Drive, along with the clips already existing on the dedicated server? Scoured Squarebox site, FAQs, manual, etc. but can’t seem to find a specific reference.If yes, does the Google Drive where clips will be stored need to be directly accessed by, or visible to, the hosted Apache server where Tomcat is physically installed? If so, how difficult is it to set up a Google Drive from a hosted Linux server?

You can use most any web hosting storage for proxy if you use the http proxy setup in CatDV.
But I’d like to clarify that Google Drive is not Google’s Cloud Storage product.

If you’re looking to use the actual “Google Drive” storage, the way that Google Drive exposes your clips to the “public” might not be the best way to store proxy. However, if you are looking to have the media served by your Tomcat server, then that will work fine but still generate a copy on your hosted server, which defeats the purpose by serving it off of the server’s hard drive, as the Google Drive would sync to your drive where the Tomcat server would store it.
I believe you are looking for web users to pull from Google directly and that might not be easily done with traditional Google Drive storage as CatDV proxy is usually served from a straight
“/path/to/proxy/media/path” type structure and I believe “Drive” needs to serve a specific URL from the Drive app. (check this.)
But there are a ton of cheaper options for web storage out there that I’m sure you could use (Amazon and the Google Cloud above) that would support the type of protocols that you need.
As always, you need a solid web admin to do these more web centric configurations, as security is highly dependent on your configuration.

Ah, of course-thank you for clarifying. Totally overlooked that little fact about Google Drive constantly synching between Tomcat server and cloud. Will be doing some research on GCS.
