Can I use FCP to burn .m2v video and .ac3 audio to set-top playable DVD?

Roxio Toast.

Use the Free BitVice muxer app to put the two together into a program stream, then use the Free MPEG Streamclip to rip it to a Quicktime movie, then on to iDVD to make the DVD.

How is it that you have FCP 5 and/or 6, but don’t have the associated apps like Compressor and DVD Studio Pro?

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the simple explanation – as for Compressor/DVD Studio etc . . . I have been using FCP since version 3 but have no experience with DVD Studio having always used the simpler iDVD. I have just purchased FCP Studio 2 and have not installed it yet (nor have I installed Leopard) – if I had the time to play I would welcome the opportunity but my client needs this DVD quickly. Do you think it would be easier in DVD Studio?

If you have DVDSTP, run and install it. Forget about BitVice, iDVD etc. You just need to put your two files together in the time-line.

I tried BitVice Helper but it doesn’t support .ac3 (only aif or .wav) any ideas on converting an .ac3 to aif/.wav?

I really don’t want to crack the FCP Studio 2 Box yet . . .

Well you already have the m2v and ac3 file so DVD SP will be MUCH faster, those two files are already to be brought into DVD SP, because they are already encoded you will not have to wait for the long encoding process in iDVD, nor will you have to wait for then to be muxed together before you let iDVD encode then all over again. The work flow you are going with is like taking 2 steps forward and then 3 steps back.

With DVD SP you could be done in a fraction of the time because you already have the pre-encoded m2v and ac3 files that are needed to make the DVD.

I’d echo using DVDSP – in the reverse of your situation a few years back, I had trouble figuring out iDVD and found DVDSP much easier to use (weird, huh?). Once you get a simple menu in there, you can also just do a “Save As” for any additional projects you have, import the new files, drop them on the timeline and be good to go. I’d recommend picking up the APTS book on DVDSP – you don’t need to go through all of it, just the steps you are working on at any given time. Basically though, if you’ve been using FCP, DVDSP isn’t too intimidating.

you should really be able to author in dvd studio it is very easy to do what you want, import 2 files, drag to timeline, set the disk startup to the track1, remove menu, burn

all this stuff about reauthoring is total rubbish unless you need to reedit the footage

use streamclip if you need to reedit

bitvice isnt suitable for what you need, you already have the compressed files

Ben,
Toast do not try to recompressthe MPG2 again this way?
I tried with MPG1 (.mpg) and Toast reprocess it the same that if you would drop a .mov.
I haven’t tried with a .m2v.
This happens sice Toast 6.
