Can I use a Gtech FW800 drive for this
can we edit in FCP S2 with a Graid 3TB FW800 drive in 1080ProRes422? we’re looking for an alternative to running on our san for a specific client, and as long as we can use the drive connected FW800, 3TB is enough space for what we need.
An alternative is to connect eSATA (if I have the free slot in the MacPro, which I don’t think we do with the video card)

Yes, it will work. You won’t get as many RT layers as you would with a SATA raid, but it will work.

If you had the G-Raid 3 with eSATA you would get 220 MB/s. That is pretty fast. CalDigit VR does this too I hear (haven’t tested yet).
Still, and internal drive on your MacPro will be faster than the FW800 connection on the G-Raid, I believe. Or very close.

Firewire 400 is slower than a direct attached drive (SATA or PATA). Firewire 800 is faster than a single drive so is a good fit for RAIDs taking advantage of at least two drives.
