  • Can I only render as MPEG4/H.264 under .AVI?

Posted by Mark Lynch on February 6, 2010 at 11:08 pm

(Preface: The “MainConcept AVC” and “Sony MP4” MP4 options that came equipped on my Vegas only have minimal, bad quality options, and do not work for me properly)

I had intalled Xvid MPEG4 and used it for a while, and I could access it and render as it only by choosing .AVI –> Custom, then selecting from the list of codecs.

I uninstalled that because the Xvid was always letterboxing on Youtube (ie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9BFkVbVtiE ), rather than filling out the entire video window (ie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZv6QuNhZwo ).

So I tried installing two other MP4 codecs (one at a time, obviously, to see if there were different results). Both were the MPEG4/H.264 one, and when I look for it to render in Vegas, I end up only finding the same “Xvid MP4” option under custom .AVI. Then of course I have the same letterboxing issue on Youtube.

Is this “Xvid MP4” under .AVI option the only option I have for any MPEG4 codec?
    And.
What is the reason for the letterboxing on Youtube? I just need a good codec that won’t do that. No luck in over a year now.

    Thanks!

Letterboxing happens when the aspect ratio of your render does not match the aspect ratio of the project. You just need to make them both 16:9 when you render. Any MPEG4 codec should be able to achieve this.

As you have seen, certain codecs and only be used with certain containers. Xvid and DivX only support AVI. Sony AVC and MainConcept AVC use an MP4 container. Quicktime MPEG4 uses a MOV container. I’m not sure why you are unhappy with the Sony AVC/H.264 encoder. In Vegas Pro 9.0 it’s quite good. Perhaps you are using an older version or Movie Studio?

Anyway, to remove the letterboxing make sure that both your project and render template are set for 16:9 aspect.
