  • Can I install Final Cut Pro x without Losing Final Cut Pro 7?

Posted by Mike Schmitt on February 4, 2012 at 2:52 pm

I have a quick job to do this weekend. I’m still using Final Cut Pro 7, but the original editor cut the thing is Final Cut ProX.
Can I install final cut pro X without messing up my version 7?

    Thanks!

You can, but even Apple recommends keeping them separate.

If you plan on using fcs3 for the foreseeable future, I’d freeze your system in place, and work off of a clone.

Couple of options, clone your OS to another drive and download fcpx there.

Use Xto7 to move the fcpx project to fcp 7. This might not work perfectly, so read up on it. You’ll need the FCPX editors help.

You could then use 7toX to move it back to X at a later date.

For what it is worth, on several machines, I moved my FCP Studio apps to a “Final Cut Studio” folder and am running FCP X without issue. FCP 7 appears to be working just fine also.

[T. Payton] “For what it is worth, on several machines, I moved my FCP Studio apps to a “Final Cut Studio” folder and am running FCP X without issue.”

This happens automagically when you download X to a drive that has 7 on it.

Curious, but the best practices install doc seems to have been taken down.

I have always kept the two on separate partitions and have had a very smooth run with FCPX.

On the other hand I have a friend who continually has strange FCPX issues, Quicktime issues, odd happenings in FCP7 and other weird behaviour that I put down to having FCP7 on the same machine.

I think the best answer is that it will *probably* work but your mileage may vary.
