  • Can I install final Cut 6 on non operating system hard drive?

Posted by Brad Jenkins on October 23, 2008 at 11:13 pm

Can I install Final cut 6 ( or studio 2 for that matter) on my second hard drive that does not have the operating system on it? And if so, is there any issues or problems that occur when installing this way?

My 1st hard drive with O.S. does not have enough space to install studio 2.

thanks in advance for any help

No, FCP requires the OS to be on the same drive as the software. You can install the OS and FCP on that 2nd drive if you desire, but that is not a good way to run a system.

You can also choose not to install all of the templates which take up enormous amounts of room.

The applications themselves are relatively small. You can always install templates later.

Your best option is to clone your current HD onto a larger HD and replace your current HD with the new one.

How about older MacBook Pro laptops?

What do you do in that case? We have an independent contracted editor with a first generation MacBook Pro with a 120 gig hard drive. As you know… that’s not much by today’s standards.

What would you suggest in this case?

You can install all of the templates on a separate external drive, or upgrade the hard drive. Laptops get up to 500GBs now.

    Thank you, Steve!

That’s exactly the info I needed.
