Can I have too much ram?
Posted by Ron Bakker on November 13, 2012 at 7:16 amI built a new computer and it is running well. And Yesterday sv11 was running well without a single crash and then today I fitted the new ram I was waiting on and tonight it has crashed 5 times in an hour. Between Yesterday and today I have not installed any software and the only time it has been on the internet was when I installed sv11 for the updates.
A few more questions:
Do I need the media manager installed(is it important)and do I need quicktime installed? I use mainly 60d footage (H.264)
I would be surprised if it was the new ram as it is all identical and matched with the motherboard and cpu.But it is the only thing I have changed. I was even working on the same project.
Sometimes it crashes when I am working on a clip and other times it crashes when I want to render.
I have the latest nvidia drivers installed(right from when I built the computer).Pentium 2.4 quad|Asus P5G41C-M LX mobo|4 gig corsairs 6400 ram|Corsairs 630 power supply|Gigabyte 8800gt|2x seagate 500gig Hd’s|Lg dvd burner|windows7 premium , SV9E

November 13, 2012 at 7:43 amNo, you don’t need Media Manager. I have it installed and use it all the time.
Yes you’ll need QT if you are rendering to QT.
OK, and kinda more relevant, than installing extra RAM, you downloaded a NEWER update to SV11. Would that be Build700 or 701? Did you install-over OR do an uninstall and then install?
Be good to hear from others on the efficacy of a QUAD making use of 4gb of RAM.
I’m also questioning the 630PSU. In adding more RAM=resistance=power you might be getting to the edge of its abilities.
So, plenty for you to checkout.

So, did you install the Disc version and the EITHER “Install-over” OR uninstall and then install?
Have you got GPU acceleration ON? If so, turn it off.
You said you added extra RAM, was that to the same PSU driven PC? What is the Wattage of your PSU now?

November 13, 2012 at 8:35 amActually I think when I went to install vegas on this new computer it gave me the option to download the new 701 build before I actually got to installing. So I think I did not actually get the original build on this computer at all.
I have a new PSU, Corsairs 800w. I shall turn off the gpu acceleration as I know it is on at the mo.
I work in .mov but render to .wmv I might try changing back to yesterday’s ram as this is the only change I am aware of. I get back on it tomorrow as it is now my bedtime. November 13, 2012 at 4:25 pmI would suspect bad RAM if it was running fine before. First try re-seating the memory modules in the board again. You also may want to check the virtual memory settings to see if they were updated to match the additional memory you added. Usually that is based on the memory in the system when Windows is installed.
As you see mine is set to 12GB based on the total RAM I have. If that does not work, try running a memory test overnight to verify that the RAM is good.

November 13, 2012 at 11:40 pmalso, take out half your RAM and put your computer to some hard work. If it fails you have a RAM Problem. If not, swap in the RAM you removed and try it again. If any of your RAM is bad it will fail faster with half of it installed. But only the half containing the bad module will fail.

November 14, 2012 at 1:40 amIf you installed new RAM and did not run MEMTEST86 overnight to burn it in and test it then that’s your next step. You could very easily have a bad RAM module.

November 14, 2012 at 4:23 pmHi Again
Yesterday I started a fresh with just one stick of ram installed, it went alright for a while, a bit jumpy in preview as for gigs is a bit to lean. Then I swapped out the ram for a different one. This made no difference. Then I went for two sticks, behaved itself for a bit longer. Then I went up to 16gig. And no real change. I used the “mem check” function each time so the bios can adjust each time for the changed ram. And made sure it was in the right slot each time. I installed quicktime just to make sure it was not that.
I’m not bugging for more clues, just letting you know I am taking your advice onboard.

November 14, 2012 at 4:29 pmIf the ram is an issue, try using an eraser on the connection ends. Sometime a little flux can remain on them from production and this will help remove any. I have had this work well in the past…
Good Luck!

November 14, 2012 at 4:55 pmMake sure that the RAM timings are correct in the BIOS. The motherboard doesn’t always guess correctly. I had to manually adjust my timings on my G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series memory with my ASUS P9X79 PRO motherboard because it didn’t get them correct.
